Ways to get home repairs done well

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 1:05 pm

House maintenance is really a problem these days. You need a good firm to do it, unless you can do all sorts of jobs yourself, like carpentry, building repairs, and plumbing and heating. I can do a few things in this field like changing a tap washer, and putting up shelves but when it comes to getting the gas boiler fixed, I need to get someone in.

One of the big problems with this is that there are so many trades involved in home repair that it is difficult to find one firm that can do it all. And you might end up paying a fortune.

It must be a bit of a headache to have to run a business with all these people of different skills, too.

anyway, it is simple enough to find one firm that can help with carpentry and building repairs, as these two skills often overlap. There is a lot of carpentry and joinery involved in house building and house repairs, so most firms can supply both. But don’t get caught out: carpenters and joiners don’t do the same thing! Get a joiner to do heavier work, where the results will not be seen. They are good for that, but not for building cabinets or bannister rails – a joiner is just not the man you want.

No, if you want the finished job – say a bannister rails – to be really good, get a carpenter. On the other hand if stairsneed to be repaired, get a joiner.

The same thing applies to plumbing services. If you want someone to put in some new taps or fix a leaking toilet, then you want a plumber, plain and simple. Most plumbers call their businesses ‘plumbing and heating’ but if you need some work done on your central heating system then you need a qualified heating engineer. In the UK that means Corgi registered, and in Ireland it is Bord Gáis Approved. Make sure you get the right engineer for the job.
