Fountain of Youth

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 10:04 am

Botox is inexpensive and minimally invasive treatments that can help almost anyone look years younger. Therefore, it’s no wonder it’s continually more and more popular. Botox is safe. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Millions of men and women have Botox cosmetic treatments all over the world making it one of the top cosmetic procedures performed for the temporary removal of facial lines.

It is a strange twist of medical science that a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum should get used as fountain of youth. That is what Botox is – a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. It’s important that you not overdo your use of Botox. Some people may also develop antibodies to the toxin.

Botox is nonsurgical. There is no blood gushing during a Botox treatment. Botox injections basically relax the muscles of the face. A treatment normally takes 2 to 10 minutes only. When the muscle is relaxed, the lines are less noticeable. Once injected into the skin, an improvement can be seen within days and your youthful face may last up to 4 months. However, the results tend to vary from individual to individual depending on their living habits and medical profile. Botox can result in a smoother look for up to four months.

Of course, like all medical procedures, one also has to check if the body is capable of receiving such treatments. Botox may be something hypoallergenic to millions of people, but it may not be for you. Thus, if you are considering Botox cosmetic injections, you should see a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

Data Acquisition

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:43 am

Data acquisition is an important technique in many fields of research, particularly in the life sciences. There are few extant systems capable of allowing remote access to a data acquisition system by multiple investigators, especially in real time. Data acquisition is the process of extracting, transforming, and transporting data from the source systems and external data sources to the data processing system to be displayed, analyzed, and stored. A data acquisition systems (DAQ) typically consist of transducers for asserting and measuring electrical signals, signal conditioning logic to perform amplification, isolation, and filtering, and other hardware for receiving analog signals and providing them to a processing system, such as a personal computer. Data acquisition is widely used in many areas of industry. Data acquisition is used to acquire data from sensors and other sources under computer control and bring the data together and store and manipulate it.

Data acquisition is controlled by a “protocol”, which is simply a graph file that contains a series of output waveforms. It also contains instructions about which input channels to record signals from, how many episodes to acquire, etc. Data acquisition boards is the sampling of the real world to generate data that can be manipulated by a computer. Sometimes abbreviated DAQ, data acquisition typically involves acquisition of signals and waveforms and processing of the signals to obtain desired information. Data acquisition is information. The more information you have, the better you can perform your job.

Data acquisition is accomplished with the help of a computer. With the Varian Unity INOVA spectrometer a SUN workstation is used and the VNMR software runs the necessary processes. Data acquisition is made by a photon-counting detector (CP40). A VME-based computer under OS9 controls the detector and stocks the data. Data acquisition card is further complicated by the upgrades to new networking technologies that are generally prohibitively expensive or impossible for researchers to monitor. Statistics collection functionality takes resources directly away from forwarding of packets/frames, which tends to drive commercial providers toward switches from vendors that sacrifice potential research functionality in exchange for forwarding performance/throughput.

Data acquisition is the process of automatically taking measurements such as temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, geographic position, vibration, salinity or a thousand and one other parameters. The measurements may be for later analysis, for the control of a process or for simply displaying to interested personnel.

Managing to eat

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 10:46 am

The price of food is just another line on the growing list of financial pressures in 2008. As reports of a global food crisis become more frequent, The Telegraph recently reported that UK food prices had risen by 7.4% (an average of £750 per household) in the space of a year.

For those with debt problems, the news is particularly difficult to stomach. Most of us will be expecting to sacrifice some of our hard-earned disposable income to cope with the growing cost of living – and for those with little to spare, dealing with debt is a growing concern.

If you are constantly having to make compromises in order to manage your debts, it’s best to talk to an expert debt adviser. They may be able to suggest something more suited to your situation, such as a debt management plan or a debt consolidation loan.

The good news: there are things you can do to ease the pressure. Here are some practical tips for lowering your grocery costs without going on hunger strikes or taking up ‘freeganism’…

Buy less, waste less
It sounds like the kind of thing your parents would tell you as a teenager, but when it comes to food, never has a wiser word been spoken.

In a recent report, WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) estimated that up to a third of food intended for human consumption ends up in the bin, at an annual cost of around £420 per adult.

Before you shop, plan exactly what you need, write a list, and stick to it. Easier said than done when you’re faced with so many tempting offers, but that leads us onto the next point…

Shop online
Walking into a supermarket can be a high-pressure experience. Supermarkets know every trick in the book – clever displays, ‘special offers’ that save you a matter of pennies, and even wafting around pleasant smells to make you hungry – all designed to get you to empty your pockets.

Shopping online makes buying food and household goods an altogether more straightforward experience. There’s less temptation involved, and it’s much easier to stick to your essential shopping list when you can’t hear a chirpy store announcer telling you to ‘BOGOF’!

Take advantage of offers – but be careful
Special offers are great when they are genuine, but remember that stores still want a profit. Do the maths: many ‘Buy 2 for £x’ offers in fact save you next to nothing and are designed to get you to buy more than you need.

More often than not, the best offers are ‘Buy One Get One Free’, or similar: you get double what you paid for, meaning some can be saved for later, and you can spend less next time.

Be thrifty, buy value
Change your attitudes about what you buy. Many people assume that the highest-priced products with the prettiest packaging are best. This is what the manufacturers want you to think, and it isn’t always true.

Try a few cheaper brands – the difference in quality is often minimal, and your pockets will thank you.

Grow your own
How do you think your grandparents managed in their day, when money was often even tighter? Growing your own fruit and veg is a rewarding and cost-effective way of stocking up your cupboards.

You’ll also be saving on the environmentally unfriendly ‘air miles’ that supermarkets rack up having the same stuff delivered to them – so you can give yourself a big green pat on the back.

Buy the ingredients, not the package
Manufacturers of pre-packed meals have a lot of running costs and also want to make a profit. Preparing your own meals is not only cheaper, it will help you develop valuable cooking skills that you will keep for life.

Cutting down on food costs is a surprisingly simple and effective way of saving money. Of course, if you are struggling with debt, lowering your grocery costs might not be enough in itself.

Basement Waterproofing Materials and Uses

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:41 am

There can be some big differences in the materials and the way they’re used with basement waterproofing systems. The general public may be able to purchase some, while other will only be for professionals. Let’s check whatever the situation is and learn from it for your own home condition.

First of all though, you need to be aware that the area you live in also affects the amount of water that’s likely to be around. So take that into consideration as this will also influence the type of materials you can use.

The first type of basement waterproofing materials that most people seem to be looking for are simple sealants. They did waterproofing at the basement already; however, some areas are moist so they need restoration. There are top-end sealants such as RadonSeal which will treat poured concrete, mortar in block walls or stone foundations and concrete or cinder blocks.

You need to treat the whole basement, walls and floor, otherwise it’s likely the water will simply find a way around the sealant. This product comes with a limited 20-year guarantee so looks like a viable option. Sealant is a potential problem to be aware of, (all sealants, not just this particular one)as water weeping can be avoided from the inside part of the basement. Putting this another way, there can be a large quantity of fluid pushing against and through the materials from which the cellar walls are constructed.

Other avenues will need to be explored if you have cracks in the wall. Plaster wall can be can be repaired by replacing the plaster coating. All you need to do is chip away any loose material from around the crack and then fill the area back up with plaster.

One other option which is available is to use a stitching material. These metal staples are stapled across the cracks to prevent or limit further movement. The cracks are then filled with any cement that doesn’t shrink.

More serious cracks in the walls or the floor of the basement can be filled with Gunite, a form of concrete that is sprayed on. The special spraying equipment that is required can be rented. The mixture ratio must be correct for the spray to fill any cracks and leave a smooth finish. Since it sticks to many different surfaces it makes for a great option.

It has to be mentioned that the key to basement waterproofing is not only the substance but its proper application as well. You should also be looking at making sure there is as little water getting into the ground around the basement as possible.

Some things to try:

  • - maintaining rain gutters that are in excellent shape.
  •

  • - sloping the ground away from the foundation of the house
  •

  • - grass can be seeded around the foundations once the flower beds, bushes and trees have been removed
  •

  • - patching cracks in the driveway.
  •

  • - put in some curtain drains to move water from the surface away from the base of the home
  •

  • - putting in dry wells for the rain water spouting at a minimum of ten feet from the house.
  •

  • - installing sump pumps.
  •

  • - utilizing inside channels to gather water oozing through the basement walls and course it to a floor pipe

    Tips for a Productive Commute

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:28 am

Do you have a half hour or longer commute? If so, you may feel like you’re wasting 5 hours a week with the task of driving. Many people do unsafe things like talking on a cellphone, text messaging, even reading the newspaper while they drive. Why? To regain some of that lost time. But there are plenty of safer ways to get something accomplished while you’re stuck in traffic.

Relax. This ought to be the easiest one, but sometimes isn’t. Turn on some music, drive a little slower and just use the time to relax. Remind yourself that everybody needs a little down time, so that’s productive, too. You’ll probably find this a lot easier to do part of the time, if you do something else at other times, so here are a few ideas.

    • Listen to an audiobook. Whether it’s just the novel you don’t have time to read or a business book to help your career or finances.
    • Brush up on a foreign language. Publishers like Pimsleur and Berlitz offer CDs, tapes and even downloadable MP3s specifically designed for learning a language while you drive. Here’s a useful skill that also helps sharpen the brain generally.
    • Listen to news or talk radio. No matter your interest, there’s probably a talk radio program available to fit – from personal advice to pets to cars to cigars, talk radio is about a lot more than just current events. (Just remember when you’re ready to call in to a talk radio program that the number 4 tip in my list of 12 tips for calling a talk radio show is “don’t use a cellphone!” Wait for the phone call until you’re out of the car.)

How Adults Can Start Playing The Piano Again…After Years Of Being Away From The Piano

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:09 am

There are millions of adults who took piano lessons when they were kids, and would love to start playing again, but dread the idea of starting over again and taking lessons. To see how easy it is to get started again, take a look at this blog on Piano Chords & Chord Progressions.

It’s true that you never forget certain things that you learn as a child, like riding a bicycle. Playing piano is another example. A minimum of two to three years of piano lessons is enough to instill an indelible knowledge of piano basics. That knowledge will likely be remembered throughout adulthood.

However, some adults who have been out of practice for several years may find returning to piano lessons challenging. Re-learning piano as an adult can be intimidating. Starting piano lessons again can be fulfilling though for those prepared to tackle the challenges.

One of the biggest challenges of re-learning piano as an adult is changing methods. Adults who took only a few years of piano lessons as children may have initially learned to play by rote. Playing piano by rote focuses more on memorization and mimicry than on learning to read music and understand chords.

Children tend to learn very quickly by rote. Children who learn by this method appear to progress quickly. Eventually though, as pieces get more difficult, learning tends to slow down significantly. Grasping new skills becomes increasingly difficult. This method is becoming less and less favored by piano instructors today for this reason.

Another hurdle to clear when re-learning piano as an adult is chords and theory. This is especially true if an adult took only a few years of piano lessons as a child. Adults who had five or fewer years of piano lessons likely didn’t learn chord theory. Even adults who learned to read music as children frequently have trouble grasping chords.

Learning anything (piano or otherwise) is always harder in adulthood than childhood. It’s not impossible though. Anyone with a foundation in music is at an advantage when re-learning piano as an adult.

Are you an adult trying to brush up on old piano skills or learn new ones? Here are four things to consider before you start:

    1. Be willing to put aside old habits. The piano hasn’t changed since you were a child. Teaching methods may have though. Don’t discount a teaching method just because it’s different from what you’re used to. Compare different learning methods before deciding which one is best for you.

    2. Be prepared to start from scratch. It will be easier for you to ease into piano lessons simply because you’re familiar with a keyboard. That doesn’t mean it won’t be challenging. Don’t expect to play a classical sonata in the first month. Take things slowly, perhaps even starting with a refresher of the basics (i.e., scales).

    3. Be committed to rehearsing your songs. Remember your mother nagging you to practice as a kid? Mom’s not around now, so it’s up to you to push yourself. Piano lessons are only as good as the effort you’re willing and able to put in. Make daily practice time a priority.

    4. Find the right teacher either in person or online. There are many excellent courses on the web you can take that allow you to progress at your own pace. Check out  PlayPiano.com and PianoLessonsByVideo.com. Getting the right piano instructor makes all the difference in the world. Look for a teacher who is experienced with working with adults.  He or she will then set you on the right course for re-learning.

Re-learning piano as an adult can be very rewarding. Not only will you improve your piano skills; you’ll stimulate your brain too. This will probably help you improve other areas of your life. Adults who take piano lessons often report a better ability to concentrate. Many also realize a greater aptitude for learning other new skills. These things carry over into other parts of adult life, from work, to hobbies and even raising children.

    How to Control Tinnitus

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 1:00 pm

I would like to share information on tinnitus in the hope that you can get it under control. That’s a name for a condition suffered by a person who hears ringing sounds not from an external source.

Fundamentally you’re hearing ringing which does not actually exist. It is one of those sounds which is persistent and it never stops, and it has been the most frustrating and annoying condition to live with. You are going to hear it, even if it is three o’clock in the morning and you are trying to sleep.

For you not to have tinnitus as a life problem I wanted to show how you can gain control of it. There are many theories as to why tinnitus cause but the exposure to a loud environment is the most likely culprit.

War is very loud which can result in war veterans suffering from this condition. The remedy recommended by the medical experts is to undergo surgery. Finally, the surgery that is performed is not entirely safe.

You could wake up and hear nothing, but then again it could be that the ringing will have not have stopped. Alternatively, ignoring tinnitus can lead to control over it. Reality check tells us that our brain is trained to do these things. Your body is constantly moving and having sensations. As you are reading this your body is getting the sensation to understand what you are reading and understanding what you are reading. The body is a wonderful thing and it can do so many different things. And it never sleeps. It is constantly working, whether you are sleeping or you are awake.

So your brain filters what you’re going to smell, taste, see, hear, and feel, obviously your conscious mind can’t be bothered with all of them. Remedies exist which train you to unconsciously take no notice of the ringing.

A basic exercise will make it work. Attempt to read the newspaper with paying close attention and perhaps you will see that you do not hear any more ringing. Keep doing that, and soon you will be unconsciously ignoring the tinnitus.

Repetitive exposure to loud music especially in nightclubs, unhealthy food and lifestyle are notable reasons for tinnitus amongst teenagers.

The information provided is for research purposes only. No medical advice is implied. As with any condition it is best to consult a doctor before taking any medical advice.

    My do it yourself weekend

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 12:03 pm

Did you spend your last weekend consuming movies, DVDs, CDs, books, etc, too? Have you thought how rewarding getting creative yourself can be?

I want to show you three different ways to get creative! I will cover three different fields, so everyone can pick something that suits him or her. The three different fields are reading, knitting and making a photo calendar.

My first idea for getting creative is making a special bookmark: a funny bookworm bookmark. I found this on a german website on bookmarks called lesezeichenladen.de. You can find the instructions in the section Bücherwurm basteln. Have Fun!

The second idea, although I must admit that most probably this will appeal more to women, is to knit a nice looking cap for the colder season. A fine set of instructions can be found on wunderfaser.de, the section is called Mütze stricken. I personally own one of those (to be honest, it was a present, but it was made using these instructions…)

The third idea for you creative minds out there is to make a photo calender with your own pictures. It is done using all free software. The instructions and the software can be found on www.naturfotokalender.de (section: Kalender mit Fotos selbst erstellen.)

Hope you enjoy my tips for a creative time! Go and do something yourself, you will be proud of it!

What’s the big deal about bunk beds?

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 10:30 am

Consider this; You have a three bedroom house, you and your spouse sleep in one room, your 6 year old son has one, and your 4 year old son has the third one. Your family is now expecting a baby girl! Congratulations? Of course, but where are you going to put everybody? You don’t have the time or the financial resources at the moment to even consider looking for a bigger house.

The two boys can double up in one of the bedrooms, however, there just isn’t enough room left over after both beds are in the one bedroom. Bunk beds to the rescue, so to speak. Not only will this furniture combo give you the increased room you are looking for, today’s kids bunk beds have so many themes and attractive features, that your kids might actually want to go to bed.

Okay, maybe not, but here are some more positive features; Today’s bunk beds and futon bunk beds sets are not only safer than years ago, they have additional optional features that parents can really appreciate. For instance, some have drawers that can be added on the sides or underneath the bottom bunk. Some sets come with so many drawers, you can actually eliminate a dresser and save even more space.

Ever heard of a Trundle bed? Well, it’s big in Europe. Basically it’s an extra bed that slides underneath the bottom bunk that gets pulled out when you need even more sleeping space, for that occasional sleep over, for instance.

If your expecting something unexpected and you just don’t have the money or the space at the moment. Check out what an age old sleeping arrangement can do for you.

    Best Digital Camera

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:44 am

It seems that every month manufacturers are coming up with another new digital camera in their range to entice potential customers If it is your first camera then you probably won’t have a clue what to look for if you are searching for the best digital camera you can buy but there is help.

Eventually saving enough money to buy that eye-popping, 10 megapixel, 10x optical zoom with up to a sixteen gigabyte expandable memory using super hi-speed SD memory card and of course, very compact; which we hope be the envy of almost everyone we know.

Can you imagine your surprise when you find that the camera you have researched so diligently and have set your heart on has been usurped from its position of best model with a newer more expensive version.

We sigh because the manufacturer of this amazing gadget claims that this is the best digital camera yet out in the market. We should have known but because we must have the best digital camera then we will just have to swallow the extra cost.

Don’t worry though if you are not sure what to do; just follow the guide below and you shouldn’t go to far wrong. Much is made about the number of pixels and the truth is the more you have the better.

You normally find that the higher the number of pixels, referred to as megapixels, the camera has, the deeper the colors and clarity of the image will be which helps the final printed version. This increase in megapixels means that poster size pictures can be easily printed. Good quality models are now using large LCD screens around the 2. The best digital cameras are able to touch up and edit the images this is an excellent feature to have as standard.

So go for the biggest display you can but bear in mind that you would be advised to carry spare batteries as large screens drain the power faster.

Almost every digital camera has a digital zoom but it is the optical zoom that you need to try for if your budget will extend to it. Optical zooms are usually fitted on the more expensive cameras with a combination digital zoom.

Images on these cameras are stored on small storage cards that can have a huge memory capacity but be sure to buy the right type. A number of cards have been used over the years but the main ones are: the Secure Digital, Compact Flash, Sony’s Memory Stick and the newer XD cards.

As the large megapixel cameras use a large amount of memory then purchase the largest capacity card your camera can use within your budget. Now the cost for these larger capacity cards has dropped it is a good time to buy camera memory.

Remember, the camera must suit the type of person you are as much as your wallet as there is no point having the best digital camera if you do not use it. Ultimately, the camera you choose should be one that you will take with you everywhere and use all the time.
