Video Conferencing on Steroids – Telepresense

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 7:00 pm

Experience TelePresence and you will never want to attend a video conference again.

That is the reaction from all the people I know who have attended presentations on TelePresence. Sure it is a video conference of sorts; it just seems so real that you want to reach out to the people across the table even though they could be on the other side of the world.

When video conferencing first came about it used a 3 x128 kbps ISDN line giving a combined bandwidth of 384 kbps. Everyone heralded it as a great invention and predicted that it would save millions of bucks on travel as staff from around the country could get around the video screen. And that is exactly what put people off, watching their colleagues on a large TV monitor. Later the monitor was replaced by a video projector but there was no real connection between the people. Needless to say that many a video conference facility got mothballed as attendances started to dwindle.

Some of the larger companies became a little more innovative and build a small studio with a set and produced a bit more of a show when executives were presenting sales figures or annual reports. But for audience on the other side it remained an impersonal medium. It reminds me of old time movies starring Abbott and Costello where images on the screen were jerky. The same happens on a video conference when the chairman starts waving his hands when he tries to explain that sales are too low. The only difference is that it now is in colour, well some sort of colour.

It is interesting that video conferencing failed to create intimacy while other video collaboration systems used for one on one video conferencing provides more intimacy. Take Skype for instance a video call between you and your son or daughter or grandchildren overseas gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

Well now TelePresence has come about. An intimate video conferencing room is created on both sides of the link.  The two rooms are often identical.  A very large screen or video wall is in front of you which shows the other conference room many thousands of kilometres away. It is so real that you get the feeling that the people in say London are sitting across the table from you – virtual reality at its highest level!

The secret lies in the placing of the cameras, microphones and speakers providing surround sound that is so real that the person could be in the room with you.

Currently the only drawback is the amount of bandwidth that is required, any where between 10 and 20 megabytes to carry the high resolution video and audio signals. With that, some integrated codecs and other software, video conferencing vendors could deliver the promised savings on conference travel.

Gillian McDonald Producing Gorgeous Countrysides in Watercolour.

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 3:20 pm

Having been born in Scotland and later married there I have a great love of Scotlands countryside. The quote Absence makes the heart grow fonder is a saying I fully empathise with and it wasn’t until later that I was searching about our areas gallery that I saw the work of Gillian McDonald a painter that is truly skilled in capturing the feel of gorgeous countryside.

Her beautiful pictures are amazing capturing the nature of the countryside but nestle in buildings that have a security and solitude which gives the feel of untouched places. Gillian McDonald learnt her art at the London college of art but focused her joy for the medium of water colour in Indonesia. She is renowned for her fantastic use of colour which really pulls out the feel of the subject she is trying to portray.

It was really nice to see the stunning crags of Ben More in the background with buildings placed in the comfortable and sweeping landscape spread out In front of it. I enjoy the fact that in Gillian McDonalds pictures you frequently discover detail in a flower or blade of grass that ties In brilliantly with other parts of the image. I understand that Gillian McDonald herself is an avid gardener and walker, often walking different areas of the country looking for her next picture to paint.

I believe Gillian McDonald now resides in Wales where she produces her work focusing on her water colours and producing pictures that are loved the world over.

A Kitchenaid Coffee Maker Brings Great Coffee To Your Home

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 10:25 am

Do you savor relaxing with a hot mug of coffee? Well, that always hits the spot, am I right? The only drawback is we usually drink too much of the delicious caffeinated beverage. Where can we find coffee maker reviews to help us decide on the best machine? And what’s it about that powerful scent of freshly ground coffee beans?

This scent can sometimes lure us in off the street. How do you reckon all of those coffee houses bring in all that money? For many years now, folks all over the country have always kept a coffeemaker in their house. How else can we enjoy that wonderful blend on a whim or immediately at sunrise? The fact of the matter is we want to have coffee when ever we desire and there is no two ways about it. What is your favorite caffeinated beverage? Well, the good news is that there are a wide range of coffeemakers to select from.

Do you have one of those hamilton beach coffee makers resting on your counter next to the toaster? I will say that these are among the nicer java machines I’ve seen for the price. Or how about the popular kitchen aid coffee maker? With this model, you ultimately get what you expect. Those are the epitome of mixer machines. Their solid structure and quality blending process are somewhat difficult to vie with. This goes the same for the top notch kitchen aid coffee maker. Maybe it is time you reassessed your morning coffee experience.

How is that current coffeemaker treating you? You surely should take that morning cup of Java an ideal one with the kitchen aid coffee machine. I know that when it comes to my coffee addiction, I know what I like and I am willing to go after it. As opposed to shelling out the bucks for a daily grande latte that runs 4 bucks, I took the less popular route and just bought a high-end machine. These days I always enjoy a perfect coffee beverage each day and do it in the convenience of my own home. It is all about finding the right machine. If you buy the perfect coffee maker, it will save money in the end.

Are you in search of an upper-scale coffee maker? Well, look no further than a kitchen aid coffeemaker in your local department store. Or you can browse for a complete selection of coffee makers on the internet. That kitchen aid coffee machine may be all you need to fulfill your caffeine addiction.

My Thoughts

Old time radio shows are fantastic for everybody!

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 7:20 pm

When I started commuting almost an hour and a half to work, I got really, really bored. That’s a long drive, and frankly the news plays the same 5 minute sound bytes over and over again. I was losing my mind.

That’s when I discovered old time radio. I happened to be searching online and came across it. I don’t remember exactly what led me to it, but I’m so glad I found it.

My discovery led to some great old shows like The Shadow, Abbot and Costello, Lights Out, Campbell’s Theater. Very cool stuff. My drive to and from work for the day suddenly became a highlight instead of a chore.

However, the more I listened to the old radio shows shows, the more I got interested in whether or not there were any new shows that were created in the same “spirit” as the old ones.

Sure enough, there were! Great shows like Red Panda Adventures and Black Jack Justice from Decoder Ring Theater products. Very cool stuff.

Now, any time I’m bored sitting in a waiting room or taking a long drive, or just whatever, I let radio theater keep me entertained and enthralled instead of twiddling my thumbs.

To my great surprise, I often find myself wishing that my waits or drives were longer! Now how’s that for proof of how great these cool shows are?

Ideal presents

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 5:40 pm

It can be a major problem trying to think of a gift for a dear relative . The last resort gifts like chocolate or alcohol or his and her shaving sets , might be ok for distant friends or relatives, but if you love the person well enough to know that they are in to experimenting with sound , then you feel a certain need to help them to compose their own music .

The UK Channel 5 TV series the Gadget Show, with the delightful Suzi Perry, did a musical gadgets round-up recently . They featured several things , but the judges picked the Korg Kaoscillator as their overall winner.

Great you think. They probably won’t have one if these weird little things already! But then you find Korg have no stock, possibly for 3 months. A bit of a late present that one.

But fear not because the Internet has a virtual alternative. I found out about the Chaos Wave Synth by accident as a video on the Web Video Widget network. It isn’t a copy of, but an inspiration based upon the Korg. None the less, it is still yellow, hmm that will remind them of you every day, and it certainly seems to make the same sort of “noises”. It’s called the Chaos Wave Synth and you can watch the video at their website. If you have enough laptops, you could even form the first chaos orchestra.

I say noises, but actually, with a little practice in the right hands and it seems to be quite a stonking musical instrument, with a wide range of tones and playing possibilities.

If you’re as old as I am, the XY pad (a sort of touch pad) seems a little reminiscent of the Dubrek Stylophone, infamised by Rolf De Harris, or the theremin, that wand like instrument featured heavily in 1950’s sci-fi B movies and in the Beach Boys record.

It certainly seems capable of producing those sort of tones as well, but have a sneaking feeling it will be the drum beats and bas lines that those young generation will get absorbed in to.

Being software it does need a computer, but that can be a laptop. Either way, there should be a way of getting headphones on it, to prevent aunt Mildred from being sucked up in to the rock anthem at the gathering.

Giving musical instruments as presents, is always a bit of an issue in my book. Give a 5 year old a drum kit, and he will play (bang) it all day, much to everyone elses shragrala. So as this can be on headphones, it’s a much safer bet in my book.

It’s available as a download, so there’s no queuing at the shops to get it either and it should still be open, even on the day itself. So if the thought of traipsing around the shops gets too mind numbing for you, you may want to buy yourself a copy too. Even without any musical skill, it can be pretty entertaining.

Aah the gift of presents. It just fills you, doesn’t it? But I’m buying one for myself too. Don’t see why the youngsters should have all the fun ;-)

Happy days.

Lifestyle Changes After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 12:44 pm

Recovering from gastric bypass stomach surgery is often a difficult thing.  The surgery itself is quite invasive and they have to cut you open in order to make the alterations to either your stomach or your digestive tract.  Not only is it affecting the skin and muscle tissues of your abdomen, it is also affecting one or more of your internal organs.  Having such a procedure done can be very dramatic to the body and it can take it some time to heal.  An alternative to having this procedure done, however, is simply eating a proper diet and losing the weight naturally.  If this is an option for you, consider not having a procedure done at all.

However, if you do decide to go ahead and have gastric bypass surgery, you will have to alter your lifestyle after the surgery is over. You simply can’t go back to the same life you were used to before your surgery. You will have to change the way you eat and what you eat. Since you stomach will be much smaller (or totally eliminated) you will not be able to eat the same kinds of foods nor in the same quantities as you were accustomed.

After you have your gastric bypass surgery it will be necessary for you to follow a particular diet for life.  The first phase of the gastric bypass diet is that which is done immediately after you have the surgery.  It will include a progressive eating pattern that goes from eating liquids only, up to eating solid food.  After the initial gastric diet is done, however, you will still need to eat a healthy diet that will be given to you by your doctor in order to get the most nutrition into your body as possible.

*As always, this should not be construed as professional medical advice and you should consult a doctor before taking any medical advice.

Things I

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 9:20 pm

Have you thought about taking a trip to a place where you can allow your most adventurous side run wild? Planning a trip to Hawaii is sure to fulfill all of your desires. Travel clubs meet every January and plan thier adventurous year. With this in mind you can spend more time outdoors without remorse.

An adventurous activity can lead to gains in knowledge, such as in the case of the numerous pioneers who have explored and charted the earth and, in recent times, traveled into space and to the moon. As a more modern example, adventure education makes use of challenging experiences for learning.

No, it doesn’t make it more adventurous to go to the West coast or some imaginary alternative parallel trip just for pretend since no one’s gonna buy it. However, if you dye my hair green I’ll never tell anyone.

Training for adventurous careers is also challenging, but surprisingly convenient. A growing number of colleges and universities offer online courses in technology, law, criminal justice, and even health care medicine.

Not literally adventurous, but how would you like a person who could just wake-up in the middle of the night and say: Let’s get out of town! We need a vacation!, or, I’d like to get Vonage VOIP and that person would most likely be cheerful about it.

When it comes to risk, examples of risky play that should be encouraged include fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. On the other hand, why do people think teens are more likely to make risky choices than adults? Do they think teens consider consequences when they make a bad choice?

Consider first that people commonly assume phone, email, cocktail party, and/or hallway discussions are invisible, transitory, and/or confidential. For activities that we perceive as out of the ordinary or slightly more risky, we come up with simple methods of helping mitigate the risk.

Purchasing a lottery ticket is a very risky investment with a high chance of no return and a small chance of a very high return. In contrast, putting money in a bank at a defined rate of interest is a risk averse action that gives a guaranteed return of a small gain and precludes other investments with possibly higher gain. Even the movie Risky Business is definitely a commentary on how greed can corrupt an individual and what the consequences can be.

International Calling Cards don

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 1:21 pm

Prepaid calling cards are a great source of low domestic rates for international calling cards. Cheap calling cards are another great way to save even more on your phone calls. For faculty and staff that travel on behalf of corporations, caller ID blocking cards are available through their offices of telecommunications. To request a calling card, a department administrator usually sends a written request to the director of the office of telecommunications.

Calling cards are good for long distance when used in moderation. On most calling cards you’ll be charged a set amount of minutes each time you use it. Phonecards or calling cards are available in most countries in retail stores, retail chains and commonly corner stores.

Generally, remote memory phonecards can be issued by many companies and come in countless varieties. International calling cards and prepaid calling cards are available through websites and can be mailed to you. There is no such thing as a free calling card, but some of the rates you find are darn cheap. This is another reason why prepaid calling cards are preferred by more people. There are more chances for you to save with the control that you have for your funds and calls.

Cheap calling cards are available at grocery stores, discount marts, cellular and electronics stores, and many other outlets. Calling cards are a convenient and inexpensive way to be sure you can place international and domestic calls when and where you need to. Find pre-paid and post-paid phone cards with the best rates for your calling destinations. International calling cards are a quick and a less expensive way to keep in touch with your friends and family that do not live with you right now.

Calling cards are good companions for mobile phones. Mobile phone calling plans, especially regional plans, sometimes have expensive long-distance rates. Prepaid calling cards are great to call anywhere around the globe without any agreements, contracts or monthly bills. Calls can be made from any type of phone, private and public, even hotels or offices.

Rather than give employees company cell phones and reimburse them later, telephone calling cards are a cheap and easy way to handle communication. They shorten the miles between you and loved ones while you’re away on business, too. If you want international calling cards for say Japan, yet you want the quality of any top card, select any cards from a reputable site. Some calling cards to certain countries have extra fees and 3 minutes increments, those calling cards are good for long calls. For short calls pick a calling card with one minute increment.

Prescott Home Builders: Advice On Finding the Right Builder for Your Home

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 11:28 am

Building a custom home is often one of the largest financial investments you will make. With so much at stake, you certainly don’t want to encounter significant troubles that could have been averted by making the effort to adequately investigate the contractor.

Selecting a good contractor is therefore critical. You will want someone who is well-established and of high integrity, one with the proper knowledge and skills in constructing a new home. One of the key aspects of this is finding a builder who is skilled at managing the team of subcontractors required for building a quality house.

Following are several valuable pointers in choosing your Prescott home builders:

Don’t ignore the importance of forming a strong working relationship with your home builder. The ideal candidate is one you belive you will like, trust and respect.

Ask for references and check their licensing and qualification statements.  Make sure the potential builder is insured and certified – you can avoid wasting time investigating builders if you’re uncertain of their qualifications in the beginning.  Contact the state or local licensing board  and the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been registered against the builder.

Go Over the inspection and building permit records for previous homes constructed by the builder. Obtain a list of previous jobs and visit the local government office where records of inspections and permits are maintained. These are public records and should be easily accessed for viewing. Look specifically for failed inspections or permit infractions. Understand that even the best of builders will often have a few minor items on the record; however, repeat infractions or large-scale failures should raise a red flag.

Find out how long the builder has been doing business, particularly in that specific area. Longevity is an important indication of work quality and customer service.

Find a thorough design checklist and use it when interviewing potential builders. Requesting info like what areas, cost ranges, and materials they specialize in permits you to assess the builder’s expertise with regard to your specific needs.

Speaking of which, be sure to look for a contractor who builds the particular type of homes that you are looking to build. Builders will have different areas of expertise – be sure to chose someone with the proper experience.

Personal referrals is one of the best ways for identifying good Prescott contractors. Ask satisfied homeowners in the area for builders they would eagerly recommend.

Be sure to talk to persons who have recently had homes built by the contractor you are considering. The input of actual customers can make all the difference.

When you are finally prepared to sign the contract, be certain to read the contract carefully – make sure it is thorough and adequately addresses all aspects talked about previously. Also, be sure the builder offers a warranty with your new house. This can be crucial to protect your considerable investment.

Choosing the proper home builder is perhaps the most essential step in building your new home. Following appropriate guidelines can help you find the right builder in your area and avoid the pitfalls of substandard workmanship. These tips will help you in selecting the Prescott builders who are best-suited to build the home of your dreams.

How to Get Cheap Cars

Filed under: Misc — Author @ 10:23 am

Automobiles are status symbols.  Private lots and huge car collections are the fantasy of many celebrity watchers.  But for some people cheap cars are the way to go.  Poor quality doesn’t necessarily follow cheap price.  Fun can be had with a less expensive car. Any car you choose, be sure to get a good car insurance.

Buy a used car if you want to save some cash.  There a much less expensive top model cars, at least when compared to the new versions.  A whole new term has emerged for higher quality used vehicles – pre-owned.  These pre-owned vehicles have even managed to pull some long time new car buyers into the used car market.  Consider this with luxury cars.  Even after 10 years a well built Lexus can look and drive like new.  In fact, many people have generations of car buyers in their family who always purchase higher end models that are used.Driving Miss Daisy immortalized this concept as Hoak, the driver, kept buying Miss Daisy’s used cars.

There are also some nice, low cost new cars.  Hyundai makes some models that are decent for less than $12K.  A well engineered car like the Honda Civic is only around $15K.  That car lasts a long time, and gets great gas mileage.  Cheaper cars are also generally less costly to maintain, and they don’t require premium gasoline.  If you are planning in getting professional car insurance advice, checkout the price, as car insurance rates are rising.

Try the cheaper, not really cheap, luxury cars.  The Audi brand is generally at the bottom portion of the price spectrum in the luxury class.  These are the best engineered in the world, nobody beats them.  A less expensive luxury sports car is the Audi TT.

Some people aren’t happy unless they scrape the bottom of the barrel cheap.  When they shop for autos they look for the car their grandparents drove.  Teens often buy this style of car.  It’s a set of wheels, and it gives them practice for a life time of practical mechanical knowledge.  But watch out, the age old adage “You get what you pay for” applies to cheap cars too.  It may not seem like such a deal when it won’t start on a cold winter morning.
